What Each State Dreams About Most

Every state has a dream it cannot stop looking up. We compared a year of Google Trends data for the 20 dream searches we cover most, state by state, to find the one dream each state searches for above all the others. Some results will not surprise you. A few will.

The headline results

  • Houses and rooms won the country. House dreams took 26 of the 50 states, from Kentucky to California. In our reading, the house is the self with walls on, so a nation searching house dreams is a nation taking stock of home, family, and the state of its own foundations.
  • Flying took nine states, mostly in the Northeast and the West, including New York’s neighbours Connecticut and Massachusetts, plus California, Illinois, and Virginia. Flying is the dream of room to move.
  • Mirrors took both New York and New Jersey, along with Oregon, Utah, and Vermont. Identity dreams, clustered where people reinvent themselves for a living.
  • Snakes won nothing and nearly won the South. Snake dreams finished second in Alabama and Mississippi and placed high across the Southeast without taking a single state.
  • The famous teeth dream won nowhere. Teeth falling out is the dream everyone assumes tops every list. It did not top one.
  • Two states would not give up their data. Alaska and South Dakota return too little state-level search volume for an honest ranking, so we left them blank rather than inventing a result.

How we worked this out

We took 20 common dream searches, the ones DreamEvaluator covers day in and day out, and pulled Google Trends data for each of them for the past 12 months, broken down by state. Trends does not report how many people searched. It reports relative interest, scaled against the other searches in the comparison. So for every state we lined the 20 dreams up on one shared scale and read off the winner, along with its share of that state’s tracked dream searches and the runner-up.

That makes this a map of relative interest, not a count of dreams. A state where one dream takes 15 percent of a 20-dream basket is a state with a clear favourite. A state where the winner takes 9 percent has its attention spread around. Small states return thinner data, and two returned too little to call. Where a result was close, the runner-up is named in each state’s entry so you can see the margin for yourself.

Every state, and the dream it dreams most

Alabama: Houses and rooms

House dreams tend to be dreams about the self. A familiar house, a house with rooms you have never opened, a house coming apart at the edges: each is usually read as a picture of your own life, and of whichever part of it is getting attention, or not getting it. Alabama put houses first, with snakes close behind. Read the full entry on our State of Dreams community report. (Winner’s share of the state’s tracked dream searches: 11%. Runner-up: snakes, 10%).

Alaska: not enough data to call

Alaska returned too little state-level search data for Google Trends to rank its dreams honestly, so we are leaving this one blank rather than guessing. The national picture above still applies, and the dreams readers send us from Alaska look a lot like everyone else’s: houses, falling, flying, and the occasional ex.

Arizona: Flying

Flying is the dream people most often describe as a good one. It tends to arrive when something has loosened: a burden set down, a stretch of freedom, a run of confidence. Find your state

Find your state in the list above and read its dream the way you would read your own: not as a prediction, but as a pointer. If your state’s favourite is not the dream you keep having, yours is still in here somewhere. The dream symbol lookup covers the full set, and our State of Dreams report counts the dreams our own community members actually post, which is a different and more personal census than search data.
